Film-making at Bungalow Town-Shoreham Beach 1914-1923
63 MINUTES Narrated by JOHN HUNTLEY
By the time Progress Film Company began their operation of the Shoreham studio, just after World War One, Bungalow Town-Shoreham Beach was already established as a theatrical colony. Florrie Forde, Marie Loftus, Will Evans, Hetty King, Billy Williams, Seymour Hicks, Marie Lloyd, Vesta Tilley and Gladys Cooper were some of the popular stars who lived or had holiday homes built on the narrow strip of shingle beach between Brighton and Worthing. With the arrival of Progress, who established a studio centre they hoped would rival Hollywood, an exciting era began and the fame of Bungalow Town spread.
Using archive film, contemporary photographs and documents, film historian John Huntley, traces the history of film-making at Bungalow Town from the early days of the cinema through to the era of Progress, and in a rare film interview Joan Morgan talks about her work for the company and describe life at Bungalow Town during its heyday.
Originally released on VHS video in 1998, this programme has be re-edited to include new material from the GILLIAN GREGG ARCHIVE.
